If you know me, you probably know how much I appreciate the books of Eugene Peterson. Nothing has helped shape me as a pastor more. I read everything he publishes, for nit only is his writing style wonderful, not only are his Bible studies remarkable, he approaches the pastor’s life as someone who has lived it for over fifty years now.
Here is a link to an article he wrote for Christianity Today several years ago. I’ve read it many times, and was reflecting on it in my prayer time today. If you have a few minutes, read it. Perhaps it will help you understand your own pastor better, or allow you to encourage him or her to take Peterson’s advice. And I hope you will pray I can do the same.

Your congregation has done well in your absence. Leaders have stepped forward and assumed responsibility. Wardens have done their jobs. The interim rector has provided sacraments and pastoral leadership. That is not to say that the rector is not needed. Of course you need to carve out time for prayer and meditation. I support that 100%. It’s my hope and prayer that you return refreshed and renewed and that the congregation is also refreshed and renewed by summer and by workshops. Together we will be much more equipped to do the work God is calling us to do.
Yes, I’m listening. I read everything you post. I am especially fond of your commentary about connecting with the physical geography of the Holy Land. The challenge will be to say connected to what you are experiencing when you return to your regular life. Best Regards, Tom Crew
